Natural Cure for All Allergies and Asthma

Ragweed Allergy Season – 5 Ways to Reduce Exposure

Fall allergy season is usually at its height from August through October, and the main culprit for most people is ragweed, causing a condition commonly referred to as hay fever. Unfortunately ragweed is prolific, generating one billion grains of pollen per season, it can easily travel 400 miles as it is light-weight and easily carried by the wind to places it doesn’t grow, which is almost no place in the United States. So, how do you survive the season and still have a life? Here are 5 ways to reduce your exposure to ragweed.

1. Keep Windows Closed

Close the windows in your house, and travel with the car windows up until the ragweed season is over which can be as early as November, depending on where you live. Use air conditioning or heat until you can safely open the windows without letting in pollen from the ragweed.

2. Cut Down Ragweed Around Your Home

Have someone else cut down the ragweed in your yard and around the edges of your yard so that you are not immediately assaulted by the pollen when you step outside to get the paper, water the lawn, or walk to the car.

3. Avoid Areas Where It Grows

That being said, fall is one of the most colorful seasons of the year, and if not being able to walk and enjoy the colors is too high a price to pay, use a high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) mask when you walk in places known to have ragweed. These masks can be bought from a local hardware store. You may look a little strange, but you’ll feel better after the walk.

4. Wash Pollen Away

After being outdoors, be sure to wash the clothes you were wearing immediately and take a shower to remove pollen from your hair and skin to avoid introducing it into your home.

5. Filter Your Indoor Air

Since it is impossible to avoid ragweed totally, some pollen will come in when you open doors, or will attach itself to you as you go about your normal activities outside. Using a high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) air purifier means that the pollen that manages to get inside your home will be constantly filtered out of your air before it causes you to sneeze, cough or have watery eyes. Designed to work 24 hours, an air purifier will eliminate the cause of the problem rather than waiting to treat the symptoms.
